Does your cosmetics include animal horns, cockerels, hooves and feathers?

It’s a pleasure to see that the beauty and cosmetics industry is gradually but surely shifting towards seeking gentler alternatives to animal-derived ingredients. People today want to understand what they consume daily, and the background and origin of products are becoming increasingly important. It’s no longer enough for a cream to simply smooth wrinkles or make skin divinely silky; the ethical impact of a beauty product—ensuring no animal suffered or was exploited for human well-being—is equally crucial.

Veganism, as a lifestyle and philosophy, positively pressures cosmetic manufacturers. Informed consumers demand products with cruelty-free backgrounds, setting requirements for manufacturers who risk losing clients if they don’t comply. Above all, it’s a step toward a better world, responsible management, and an environmentally friendly consumer culture.

HOIA natural cosmetics are made with a nature-friendly, animal-friendly mindset. We believe products designed to bring joy and well-being should not come at the cost of another being’s freedom and happiness. So, to all who follow vegan principles: HOIA is with you! Our products contain no animal-derived substances, with the only exception being beeswax in some lip balms. These are made with “happy bees’ wax.” 😊 However, we may replace this as soon as viable alternatives become available. We’ll keep you updated!

To enhance awareness for our current and future customers, here are some commonly used animal-derived ingredients in the beauty industry. These may be good to recognize when reading labels and to avoid if you’re committed to vegan principles:

  • Glycerin/Glycerol: Often derived from animal fat, with plant-based and synthetic options available. It softens and improves a product’s moisturizing properties. Unfortunately, product labels don’t specify the glycerin’s origin; check with the manufacturer.
  • Keratin: Found in hair and nail products, typically derived from animal horns, claws, hooves, feathers, and fur.
  • Collagen: Sourced mainly from animal horns and chicken feet, this protein is used in anti-aging products. Ironically, this form of collagen is poorly absorbed and can inhibit the skin’s natural collagen production.
  • Hyaluronic Acid: Sourced from rooster combs or bacterial cultures, it binds moisture and maintains elasticity in masks, creams, and serums. Manufacturer verification may be needed for its origin.
  • Lecithin: Derived from milk, blood, or eggs. Plant-based lecithin, such as soy lecithin, is a vegan alternative.
  • Cholesterol: An animal fat derivative used in skin products to smooth wrinkles.
  • Stearic Acid: Typically sourced from animal fat but also available from plant sources.
  • Musk: Originally secreted by male musk deer, otters, beavers, and wildcats, it’s used in perfumery, though synthetic cruelty-free musk is now an alternative.
  • Ambergris: A waxy substance found in the digestive tract of whales, used in perfumery. While synthetic ambergris is more common today, some brands still use traditional sources.
  • Urea: Derived from animal urine (e.g., cows, horses) and used in creams, deodorants, and more. Synthetic alternatives are available; check with the manufacturer for its source.
  • Gelatin: Obtained by boiling animal bones and skin, used in masks, shampoos, and nail care products.

Rest assured, dear vegans, that these ingredients are nowhere to be found on HOIA’s product labels. Not even a magnifying glass will reveal them! HOIA natural cosmetics contain only plant-based ingredients derived from pure nature, bringing delight to you and your senses, while also respecting nature and the environment. We aim to work in a harmonious symbiosis with Mother Nature.

Let’s care for ourselves while also cherishing nature and all living beings.
